Jaipur Bazzar by Shalini Agarwal

Sarangi of Chennai will be participating in Jaipur Bazzar by Shalini Agarwal. This will be an exhibition and sale of silk saris to take place at Hotel Chola Sheraton, Chennai on April 5th and 6th, 2010. The exhibition timings are 9.30 am to 9 pm on both days. On display will be a range of authentic Kanjivarams.

“As a young store we wish to showcase our saris to many more women, and reach out to a wider audience. We like to promote the Kanjivaram as the luxurious material that it is and the way that can happen is by having more people touching it, feeling it and savouring its myriad patterns, textures, and colours” says S.Ahalya jewellery designer and curator of Sarangi.

Sarangi has been conferred the ASSOCHAM-IMC WOMEN HERITAGE AWARD 2010. The award was presented by Shri Jyotiraditya Scindia, Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Government of India, and Smt. Swati Piramal, President, ASSOCHAM on 23 February, 2010 at a ceremony held at The Ashok Hotel, New Delhi. The awards were instituted by ASSOCHAM to applaud the efforts of women entrepreneurs.

The award ceremony coincided with Women Entrepreneurs 2010 exhibition, a joint venture of IMC Ladies’ Wing and ASSOCHAM. The highlight of the exhibition was the presence of the heritage women weavers who through their passion, talent and perseverance have strived to keep Indian tradition alive, despite many challenges.

S.Ahalya of Sarangi was one amongst ten women entrepreneurs from the weaving and saree-making industry, some of the others being Afroz Jahan from Chanderi, Madhya Pradesh (master in Dobby and Jacquard weaving), S. Ahalya of Sarangi from Chennai (celebrates the spirit of Kanjivaram), Deepa and Devika from Jaipur, Rajasthan (diversified product line), Jamini Payeng of Das Handloom and Handicraft from Haropara, Assam (working with weavers of traditional dresses), North East Network, Nagaland (Chizami Weaves), Rashmi Tapadia of Touch Class Paithani Sarees from Pune, Maharashtra, Sally Holkar of WomenWeave from Mumbai, Maharashtra (specialization in Rajasthan Kota sarees and Pure silk sarees), Shamlu Dudeja of Malika’s Kantha Collection from Kolkata, West Bengal (specialization in quilting stitch on old fabrics), Sulochana Salvi of Patan Patola from Baroda, Gujarat (specialization in Patan Patola) and Sunita Burad of Mangalmayee from Jaipur, Rajasthan (specialization in regal Rajputi Poshaks).

We’re delighted to announce the launch of our first retail store at 17a, Sterling Avenue, Nungambakkam, Chennai 600034, India. A recital by renowned flautist Shri B.V. Balasai and party, will mark its formal opening on Friday, November 6. While the store has been operational for the past few weeks, we wanted to share our happiness with clients and friends with an evening of carnatic music.

Shri B.V. Balasai, hailing from a family of rich musical tradition is an accomplished, well known and popular flautist in the music generation today. His modern outlook and adaptation to new ideas, has taken him to great heights, proving his versatility, not only in classical music but also in the film industry and fusion music as well.

He has performed extensively all over the world. Notable appearances include performing for Guru Karaikudi Mani’s Sruthi Laya ensembles in India and in other countries. As a composer he has composed music and has done music direction for classical and contemporary dance ballets. He has released many albums of classical music, fusion, and meditation.

Balasai has won several laurels titles and awards from various sabhas, institutions and organizations, such as Yuva Kala Bharathi from Bharat Kalachar, Asthana Vidwan from Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam and Venugana Visharada from Sri Brahma Chaitanya Mandir.
